Natural Hazards (GEOG 360)

Natural hazards such as floods, earthquakes, wildfires, and hurricanes cause significant human and economic losses every year, both in the United States and around the world. Increasing population densities in hazard-prone areas, expanding infrastructure, and the growing impacts of climate change are intensifying the risks and potential consequences of these events. Understanding the geophysical processes that drive natural hazards, identifying the most vulnerable regions, and learning tools to assess and predict future impacts are critical steps toward mitigating their effects.

This course introduces students to the fundamental geophysical processes behind a range of natural hazards, with an emphasis on qualitative understanding. It also explores the geospatial dimensions of hazard impacts and engages students in addressing key questions related to hazard risk assessment and management.

Coastal Processes (GEOG 370)

Introduction to the coastal system, waves and wave dominated coasts, shoreline morphodynamics, tidal and lake coasts, long term coastal development, sea level changes, subtidal and beach ecosystems, coastal dunes and wetlands, structures and organizations, coastal management and coastal hazards.
